“We gingerly walked down and when we got to the center of the basement, Mr. Allen clicked on the light switch and it literally changed my life. On every wall, there were framed photographs of Mr. Allen and all the presidents that he had worked for; Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, [Richard M. Nixon], Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan. It was amazing.”

Professor of NCRP Nancy Erbe Awarded Prestigious Fulbright Distinguished Chair

 

Nancy Erbe, professor of negotiation, conflict resolution and peacebuilding (NCRP) at California State University, Dominguez Hills, has been awarded the 2014-2015 Fulbright-PUC (Pontifícia Universidade Católica) Rio de Janeiro Distinguished Chair in American Studies.

Alumni Notes

Jason C. Coleman (B.S., ’04) has been awarded American Society of Travel Agents’ (ASTA) Young Professional Award. The award recognizes the efforts of an outstanding young travel professional. Coleman started his travel career in 1998 as a non-profit/association meeting planner.  In 2006, he went on to start his own agency, Jason Coleman, Inc. , which entered the market with a cruise-oriented focus. Today, the agency specializes in a variety of theme groups and his efforts have resulted in near triple-digit growth in the four years since its inception. 

Alan Grofe (B.A.,’07) has been appointed to the board of directors and the positions of president & chief executive officer, secretary and treasurer with Allerayde SAB, Inc. Grofe previously served as president of Healthnostics, Inc., a public medical and biotechnology analytics company. He also was a founder, president and COO of H-Quotient, Inc., where he directed strategic product development, sales, marketing and support. He currently serves as president of the Ferde Grofé Foundation and was recently president of the Manassas Symphony Orchestra.

Dr. Walter. C Jones (M.A., ’95) has been selected as dean of academic affairs of West LA College. Jones has 14 years as an administrator at the community college and university level, most recently at Rio Hondo College where, since 2008, he has served as dean of counseling and student development. There he was responsible for professional leadership and managerial direction of Rio Hondo’s many student service and support programs.

Todd Rogers (B.A., ’84) (M.A., ’93) has been selected by the Lakewood City Council to serve as mayor. Rogers, who was elected to the City Council in March 2001 and re-elected in 2005, 2009 and 2013, previously served as mayor from 2004 to 2005 and from 2009 to 2010. Rogers holds the rank of assistant sheriff in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. His command experience includes serving as captain of the Carson Station for six years. He currently oversees the department's $2.8 billion budget, personnel operations, and the training academy.

Renata Valree (B.S., ’89) (M.P.A., ’98) was awarded the following honors for her work in alternative dispute resolution: Peacemaker of the Year from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors; Certificate of Appreciation from the Center for Alternative Law and Mediation; Women Celebrating Change Honoree; and Top Ladies of Distinction.
